Product -Dooring Alert Systems

We may never ride in groups, ride  in a group road race, also known as peloton, have a cyclist riding in front of us, or we may not be able to rely  on the cyclist in front of us to alert us that a door is about to open,  or  get it right all the time.

Dooring Alert Systems, is a vehicle integrated alert system that will save lives and injuries caused by dooring. The product will automatically activate an alert signal and is designed toward the prevention of injury to people biking.

Here at Dooring Alert Systems we have invented an alert system which is a vehicle integrated alert system designed to alert the, driver, passengers and the cyclist prior to a door opening. The vehicle occupants may become oblivious to the outside surrounding prior to opening a door, and then relying on the front cyclists observation without much notice, may result in a crash. This alert system is automatically activated which will override human thoughtlessness and it is hands free!

With limited bike lanes, often called “death lanes” and facilities, cyclists can often feel discouraged due to the vulnerabilities they face on the road. Vehicle drivers can forget that cyclists are using the road lanes and as a result there has been an increase in cycle related road rage and crashes.

Dooring is a large contributor to all cycling related crashes.

The present invention, cyclists and other road users are no longer dependent on a car occupant to act appropriately and speedily in order to avoid a dooring crash.

Dooring Alert Systems not only provides a proactive approach to ensuring the cyclist has plenty of time to act to a car door opening through vehicle technology, it will saves lives, injuries and the post trauma reactions to all involved, directly and indirectly.

The Dooring Alert System is integrated into the vehicle, featuring on the back window, and soon to be released and incorporated into the side mirrors, at least, for vehicle occupants, cyclists and oncoming traffic alerting them simultaneously that a vehicle door is about to open.

THE DOORING ALERT SYSTEMS: This is HOW it WORKS

DAS Alpha: Retrofit Model

As the vehicle driver or passengers unfasten their seatbelt and the prior to the move to open a door, the Dooring Alert Systems (DAS –Alpha) will activate, the lighting sequence, “lighting up” the vehicle cabin ensuring all passengers stop and check for cyclists.

The DAS – Alpha unit is internally affixed to the back window, to the outer sides of the vehicle’s internal back window, thus the external visual of the alert system has also been designed for the cyclist.

The unfastening of any seatbelt, will activate the lighting alert system. This signal is visible from a significant distance and visible in both night and day conditions, ensuring the rider has ample time to take evasive action , together react safely to the situation, stop or move to clear the door zone.

We are currently working together with engineers, to automate this initial activation process, as to eliminate human involvement. The product will automatically activate an alert system.

Dooring Alert Systems first prototype, is known as DAS – ALPHA. The extensive list of DAS – Alpha product features and benefits can be found, in the below section and form part of our Media Kit list.

Our Patent pending alert system is currently in the final stages of development and testing. The final product will be available to purchase via our Kickstarter campaign, so

Join our DAS MOVEMENT and we will keep you updated with our progress.

DAS Lambda: For New Manufactured Model

Our vision for the extended version of the Dooring Alert System is, DAS – Lambda, designed for new manufactured vehicles. As a minimum, the unfastening of any seatbelt, together with further software development, incorporate such lighting system to the back window, within the side mirrors and containing cameras to monitor oncoming traffic. The ongoing discussions with software engineers will see the creation of additional features within DAS – Lambda, and be incorporated as a standard feature.

Dooring Alert Systems encourages everyone to support our plight, by getting involved and joining the Dooring Alert Systems Movement by registering below. This register will be used to lobby with Governments, Road Safety Groups, Car Manufacturers, Taxi associations, Share Ride companies, and Cycling bodies to mandate this invention and have EVERY New Vehicle standard fitted with DAS Lambda.

The DAS Lambda version, will ensure that human interaction to activate the alert system is totally eliminated, and our ongoing discussions with engineers will provide improved solutions to activation. As a minimum, any seat belt unfastening will activate the alert and the position of the Dooring Alert System lighting will “light up” the cabin simultaneously, ensuring all road users are kept safe from a dooring crash.

Dooring Alert Systems, will be lobbying to have this extended invention version of DAS – LAMBDA anointed into each and every new manufactured vehicle. The extensive list of current product features and benefits of DAS Lambda can also be found, in the below section and forms part of our Media Kit list.

We have the invention and creating the supporters for our product to make a difference and move towards a zero tolerance towards dooring.

About Us - Why we got involved

Cyclist ‘car-doored’ before being killed by passing truck in Melbourne

viewArticle

This death was the catalyst that created the Dooring Alert Systems.

Nikk Varvaris, Dooring Alert Systems Technical Director and Entrepreneur Inventor was inspired to create and engineer a technological product that could save further suffering.

The cyclist in question was an Italian national, travelling and working in Melbourne, Australia. He was here with his partner exploring and on a life adventure. An all too familiar story of the current time.

memorial

Above and beyond this disturbing feeling of sadness for us all, as friends and working collegues with Nikk, we expressed the duress this had created amongst us, as we all have children and this cyclist was someone’s son, loved by many and so far away.

Evan Drakos, Director, Dooring Alert Systems undertook the discovery and research on Dooring, a term used when an unexpected opening of car doors into the path of cyclists occur, highlighted a great need for a more functional solution.

An on-board vehicle warning alert system that a door is opening can support or supplant human interaction, reducing the risk of human error.

Photo of the memorial site on Sydney Rd, Brunswick , an inner norther suburb of Melbourne.

Nikk, Evan together with the other Co-Directors Arthur Kourtis, and John Raptis have spent months discussing and fine tuning the technology concept with now a patent pending technology design that can be introduced to vehicles and incorporated to new manufactured vehicles that will assist in decreasing and moving towards a zero tolerance to dooring around the globe.

We have committed our own thoughts together with car industry experts, cycling groups and research giants, to resolve the current vacuum that exists within all the current laws, and education regarding dooring. Solutions that are available today focus their attention on the vehicle and there is not one true solution that alerts the cyclist. Dooring Alert Systems unites all road users!

Education

Discovery and Research provided a number of proposed solutions, on the prevention of dooring crashes, however NOT one alone can show a progressive improved statistic towards zero tolerance.

In times of Global Economic Downfall and restrictive Government expenditure on infrastructure and upgrade treatment, we rely on Education and Respect by all road users to improve cyclists’ crash statistics, however more lives are being lost relative to when there were less cyclists on the roads.

Despite the economic, health and environmental benefits of cycling people are deterred by their feeling of vulnerability on roads dominated by cars.
The major cause of dooring crashes is THOUGHTLESSNESS. Few people do such a thing intentionally. Ideally before opening a door check the rear carefully for approaching traffic. This remains that prevention is totally reliant on human behaviour creating an unconscious competence solution every time, it’s just not possible.

e1The picture depicts, the bike lane known by many named labels, including, Door Lane, Death Lane and Door Prize. Having dedicated lines perceive a solution however segregating the cyclists to this lane, encourages drivers to expect the cyclists to remain in the bike lane, as often insufficient lateral road space becomes available. This extends the DE-unification of road users. In Seattle, USA, trivial word policing has evolved and they have humanized the awareness of unity, by introducing a new term for cyclists  “ people biking” , however

It’s just not enough! ….Riders Matter

e2Enforcements are created as a recognition by Governments that a severe problem exists, however managing these issues are not a priority, and very difficult to manage. In Australia, there have been extensive multi-million dollar campaigns to deter drivers from drink driving, however the statistics keep evolving.

So what chance does the dooring campaign have with minute amounts of advertising dollars supporting the education awareness for the long term?

It’s just not enough! ….Riders Matter

Symbols of progress and prosperity – the car; the office job; the freeways that encircle cities- all come at a human and environmental cost that could be reduced by a simple piece of engineering : THE BICYCLE

Governments, Health groups, Environmentalists are encouraging people to cycle, however promoting such activity has led and especially Cyclists injuries are rising across the English speaking world.

Recent Studies and many others analysing the last few seconds before a cycling crash occurs , found that a very high proportion of events captured , the DRIVER or PASSENGER were responsible for the action that preceded the event, including not providing enough space and turning without indicating and opening their doors without a head check. Driver behaviour is a significant factor in cyclist – opened vehicle door crashes, dooring.
This is further evidence that a vehicle detection/warning system will have beneficial results that does not totally rely on a human behaviour, but incorporated to vehicle technology.

Local Governments are now introducing dedicated bike lanes, within the current road infrastructure that are creating new issues. That’s great but they are also reducing parking meter times, which increases turnover of parking availability, in turn increases the number of car doors opening.

e3This version of a bike lane can be expensive, requires greater width than the conventional bike lane. Prevents higher risks at intersections and driveways. Change would take a number of years to have any meaningful impact, as Governments battle to balance the books and expenditure on redesigning the infrastructure treatments. Confidently, we can say that rather than creating protected bike lanes, there would be other public works that would have preferential and dedicated expenditure allocation.

It’s just not enough! ….Riders Matter

Vehicle drivers expect the cyclist to exist only in the bike lanes, and increased behavioural reckoning by both riders and drivers. Education depicts the rider to be at a safe distance from a parked car, is a lane needed or should a line exist , that is closer to a moving vehicle.

e4e5A “metre law” or “3 feet law” also exists for the vehicle to pass a cyclist which may have the vehicle encumber into the next lane, with blind spots, it may again enrage the secondary vehicle. Thoughtlessness can play a major role in the 3 foot, 1 metre rule, so do we design and carry a ruler on the bike!

It’s just not enough! ….Riders Matter

Many world-wide cities seem to have trouble with the idea of prioritizing cyclists. Boris Bikes – London’s bike share scheme, just like others worldwide, lacks the capacity to make any real change, and makes up for it with hype. It’s too expensive and education marketing may not penetrate effectively due to the many various marketing channels available today.

Cyclists’ injuries are rising across the English speaking world. Recent Studies and many others analysing the last few seconds before a cycling crash occurs , found that a very high proportion of events captured , the DRIVER or PASSENGER were responsible for the action that preceded the event, including not providing enough space and turning without indicating and opening their doors without a head check.

Driver behaviour is a significant factor in cyclist – opened vehicle door crashes. This is further evidence that a vehicle detection/warning system will have beneficial results.

Improved vehicle technology would help.

To date, the majority of vehicle technology and safety features have focused on vehicle occupant functions and protection. More could be done to protect people outside the vehicle.

e6The side mirror check sticker, aesthetically is a great initiative, and could remind the required behavioural response to prevent a dooring crash, however like any sign it has a very limited shelf life.

e7The Toronto taxi, has included a passenger side mirror.

Vehicles have had the driver side fitted with side mirrors for years, and dooring crashes have increased. Many available statistics show that 65%+ of dooring crashes occur due to the driver vehicle door opening onto the path of the cyclist. So there may be a minor benefit for a passenger side mirror to be installed, however

It’s just not enough! ….Riders Matter

Manufacturers are now developing sensors to detect other vehicles in the vicinity. This could be extended to alert drivers of cyclists, motorcyclist and pedestrians. Even so a sensor to alert cyclist of a vehicle passenger intent to open a door would be beneficial and education would become a natural progression.

Vehicle technology that improves the safety of all road users is immeasurably more important than technology that allows a vehicle to self-park.

Most people think that when they ride on the road the greatest danger is behind them – that they could be rear ended. However sample statistics from a report on Melbourne, Australia tell a different story: in fact Dooring represent higher crash statistics than the one that identifies crashes by being and rear ending.

e8    Dooring Awareness leaflets and stickers are great however how long does a campaign last and be remembered. Education such as these campaigns and they are universal, throughout the globe, can also be viewed as preaching to the converted. Those engaged will use them.

It’s just not enough! ….Riders Matter

The following is a continued review of the majority of Educational, Infrastructure, Enforcement, and Behavioural change campaign initiatives that have and currently exist.

e9

“Lead with the LEFT, to open the car door”

The Dutch innovated the driver instructor training to include teaching the learner driver to open the door with the hand opposite closest to the door. The twist of the body, enhanced the chance of ensuring the neck would turn and check for cyclists prior to opening the door. A great behavioural initiative, however there is still cause for thoughtlessness.

Still , there are drivers that physically cannot twist their bodies or turn their heads and or shoulders to the required extent, to engage in this discipline each time prior to opening a vehicle door.

It’s just not enough! ….Riders Matter

e10Not So, according to ALL vehicle drivers!

For motorists who don’t cycle, dooring isn’t even in their consciousness, or if it is, it’s a trivial problem.  And we have to change that.

It’s just not enough! ….Riders Matter

e11A campaign that draws an emotive reaction, however Dooring Alert Systems would reconsider redesigning  this sticker to announce

Someone opened a door and Dooring Alert Systems SAVED my friend.

It MAY be just enough!  ..Riders Matter

Meanwhile, campaigns seeking to call attention to dooring – and the harm it can cause – have popped up in recent years in all major cities around the globe. It’s an effort that’s now making a mark.

A closer review of the most significant benefits and disadvantages of each list highlights…

One single element that would overcome thoughtlessness is a vehicle detection / warning system that have the most substantial and beneficial result in achieving the zero tolerance we all desire.

The Dooring Alert Systems will be integrated into the vehicle, creating a Road User Behaviour and Vehicle Technology change, that will assist in closing the door on dooring.

Picture E

Many Parents will be buying their toddlers, their first bike this Christmas, our goal at Dooring Alert Systems is to have Governments and Road Authorities mandate to have the Dooring Alert Systems on all new manufactured cars, commercial vehicles, taxis and ride share company cars before that child’s bike training wheels removed.

Reports

Injuries and deaths due to “dooring” incidents are common around the world. Such incidents are sometimes viewed as an unfortunate side-effect of cycling, a problem requiring driver and/or cyclist education.

International research is examining ways to incorporate cycling into urban transport. One of the great concerns is cost and safety, recognising that despite the economic, health and environmental benefits offered by cycling, people are deterred by their feeling of vulnerability on roads dominated by cars.

Improved vehicle technology would help and prevent dooring crashes.

Relying on the driver to manage themselves and their passengers seems a solution , however with additional responsibilities comes, decreased awareness of what exists outside the vehicle, a feature of human error inevitably causes crashes and fatalities.

To date, the majority of vehicle technology and safety features have focused on vehicle occupant functions and protection. More could be done to protect people outside the vehicle. Manufacturers are now developing sensors to detect other vehicles in the vicinity, however again would rely on drivers managing and alerting the occupants. This could be extended to alert drivers of cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians, however this may still be too late to avoid dooring a cyclists, and motorcyclist alike.

Vehicle technology that improves the safety of all road users is immeasurably more important than technology that allows a vehicle to self –park . The Car Manufacturers need to be told!
More cyclists means fewer cars on the road, less congestion, less pollution and fewer health problems. But every year more people are injured riding bikes, many of them following crashes with opened car doors. We need to do enough to keep the cyclist safe and encourage the use of more cyclists incorporated into urban transport.

Cyclists should not be under constant threat of death depending on how they position themselves on the roads. There is no reason for roads to be designed in such a way that danger results from mistakes by their users when they could be designed to reduce the chance of mistakes becoming tragedies. Cyclists are re-naming bike lanes as DEATH lanes.

HENCE a vehicle manufactured design to alert vehicle occupants together with cyclists is more advantageous coupled with education.

The Door Alert Systems was created with this methodology in mind and alerts the Vehicle occupants and the Rider that a vehicle door is to open which is activated prior to a hand grasping the door handle.

There is a deluge of publicly available research reports found globally, just search the word “ dooring” , not to mention the deluge of You Tube videos depicting dooring crashes, however it would be reasonable to suggest that apart from all the statistics and education that is available, a true solution to prevention of dooring crashes would evolve from undertaking a research review of Options Identification. This would identify the most significant advantages and disadvantages of available options.

The below link provides a tabulated form of this criteria, and through smart technology and education, a zero tolerance is achievable. Dooring Alert Systems provides a true technological solution that will incorporate and support human interaction, reducing the risk of human error.

There are many initiatives surrounding dooring such as dooring awareness education, penalties that are not truly enforced, stickers in taxis that may be read, taxis installing sliding doors, now we have crashes with the taxi occupants!, rear vision mirrors for passengers, even though 65%+ dooring crashes occur from the driver’s door and they have been there for years, door handle prompts, IT’S JUST NOT ENOUGH!

We cannot rely solely on people remembering to stop, and check for cyclists and there is currently no technological solutions that alerts both vehicle occupants and cyclists that a door is about to open.

Dooring Alert Systems needs your support, Join the Dooring Alert Systems (DAS) Movement . Help us tell the world what this alert system is capable of doing, in becoming a true solution towards a zero tolerance for dooring crashes.

Dooring Alert Systems is an investment not just a product, we endeavour to gain recognition by car manufacturers, governments, cycling bodies and the community at large. The product has been invented by the Dooring Alert Systems group, with a dedicated and carefully thought out process to the invention and patent pending device.

Thoughtlessness is the main reason why doorings occur, and our invested resources, including all the people around the world that join the DAS Movement will make a difference. We will gain the momentum to charge towards zero tolerance, faster and more efficiently than any new and costly infrastructure treatment required to make cycling safe.

We just want to ride our bicycles and feel safe.

Hi, my name is Evan Drakos and I am one of the Directors at Dooring Alert Systems Group.

Dooring is a term used when an unexpected opening of a car door into the path of a cyclist that results in a collision or suddenly forcing the rider into oncoming traffic.

Recent statistics show each year over 10,000 cyclists injuries & 100’s of cyclists deaths occur Globally, as a result of dooring and these numbers are growing each year.

Here at Dooring Alert Systems we have invented the Dooring Alert System, a vehicle integrated alert system designed to alert the, driver, passengers and the cyclist prior to a door opening.

We all want all road users to feel safe, help us lobby the message,  Join us, and register with the Dooring Alert Systems Movement as we power towards the authorities:
